First Nation leaders face ouster over unpaid bills
Friday, June 20, 2008

Members of the Roseau River First Nation of Manitoba are seeking to oust their chief and council over a slew of unpaid bills that caused the reserve to lose water service this week.

Chief Terry Nelson knew the water was going to be cut off due to four months of unpaid bills. But he blamed the Canadian government for failing to adequately fund the band.

But water isn't the only issue. The band owes Manitoba Hydro for electricity, $322,000 for school tuition and has failed to pay bills for other programs.

"The main question is: Where is the money? How come we have to suffer? How come we don't have any waterworks? How come our community is in such poor shape?" Felix Antoine told CBC News of the situation.
