Navajo president opposes ouster of top lawyer
Friday, June 27, 2008

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. says there are no grounds to remove the tribe's top lawyer from office.

Navajo Nation Council is considering legislation to remove attorney general Louis Denetsosie. Some delegates are upset that he issued a legal opinion in support of Shirley's plan to reduce the size of the council.

Shirley wrote a memo to the council in response to the legislation. He says delegates have failed to explain why Denetsosie should be removed from office.

Since Denetsosie came on board in 2003, delegates have tried to remove him twice.
