Wisconsin Oneidas seek trust land in New York

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin will seek to have its land in New York placed in trust, the tribe's chief of staff said.

The tribe owns 350 acres in New York. The properties are located in the two counties where the Oneida Nation of New York is based.

The New York Oneidas are moving to have 13,000 acres placed in trust. The Wisconsin Oneidas say they are being cut out of the process.

In the past, the New York Oneidas said they oppose attempts by out-of-state tribes to reassert a presence in the state.

Back in Wisconsin, the Oneida Nation has slowly repurchased lands within its 65,000-acre reservation. About 24 percent of the land in the village of Hobart is back in the tribe's hands.
