Senate urged to act on Virginia recognition bill

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is being pushed to act on a bill to extend federal recognition to six Virginia tribes.

The House passed the bill last May. The Senate committee has yet to take action more than a year later.

Supporters include Gov. Tim Kaine (D). He asked Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman of the committee, to move the bill forward.

The tribes agreed to a ban on gaming in hopes of getting final approval of the bill.
