Martha Berryhill, Creek enrollee, turns 108
Monday, July 14, 2008

Martha Berryhill, a member of Muscogee (Creek) Nation, celebrated her 108th birthday on Saturday.

Berryhill was born in Oklahoma in 1900. She is the last living tribal member who received land under the General Allotment Act and the last living member whose name appears on the Dawes Roll.

Berryhill grew up speaking the Mvskoke language and still uses it on a regular basis. Family members say she holds some of the tribe's traditional knowledge.

"If she ever goes, she's going to be taking a lot of history with her,” Dora Neconish, 63, told The Oklahoman. "It's a new chapter for the Creeks.”
