Slade Gorton raising money for Sen. McCain
Friday, July 18, 2008

When former Sen. Slade Gorton (R-Washington) was being recommended for a federal judgeship, Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) immediately opposed it.

McCain said he opposed Gorton's views on tribal sovereignty. He was the only Senator who refused to sign a letter that recommended his former colleague to President Bush.

Seven years later, McCain doesn't seem to mind that Gorton is raising funds for his presidential campaign. Gorton, who is now an attorney and lobbyist, is raising $50,000 and more for the presumptive Republican nominee.

And despite parting ways with Gorton on sovereignty issues, McCain hired one of Gorton's former aides to work on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Jean Bumpus served as staff director from 2005 through 2006.

McCain and Gorton, however, shared similar views on one Native issue. They both voted against a resolution to apologize to Native Hawaiians for the unlawful overthrow of their government.
