Probe sought into firing of Alaska Native top cop
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

The Alaska Legislature is moving to investigate Gov. Sarah Palin (R) over the firing of the state's public safety commissioner.

Lawmakers want to know whether Walt Monegan, the first Alaska Native to hold the job, was fired because he refused to take action against a state trooper who was married to Palin's sister.

Palin has denied wrongdoing but Monegan said he was pressured by members of Palin's administration and her family to fire trooper Mike Wooten.

Mohegan said Palin's husband Todd, who is also Alaska Native, repeatedly asked him about Wooten's status.
