Vote not expected on Chinook recognition bill
Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Rep. Brian Baird (D-Washington) doesn't expect Congress to vote on his bill to extend federal recognition to the Chinook Nation but he hopes to generate support in the coming months.

The tribe's petition for recognition was rejected by the Bush administration in July 2002. Baird believes the tribe deserves federal status in the interest of justice.

H.R.6689 authorize the tribe to have land placed in trust in certain Washington counties and only those counties. The tribe would relinquish fishing, hunting and trapping rights except for ceremonial purposes.
