Museum hosts exhibit on Indian baseball players

The
Iroquois Indian Museum in New York is hosting an exhibit that documents the American Indian presence in baseball.
Louis Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot Nation of Maine, is considered to be the first Indian player in the major leagues. Now there are at least three-- Joba Chamberlain, a member of the Winnebago Tribe who plays for the New York Yankees, and Jacoby Ellsbury, a member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes with the Boston Red Sox and Kyle Lohse, a member of the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to the exhibit, 50 Indian players have made it to the big leagues. Photos document some of them, including the legendary Sac and Fox athlete Jim Thorpe.
The exhibit runs through December 31.
