Winnemem Wintu Tribe waits on recognition
Monday, August 18, 2008

The California Legislature passed a bill that calls for federal recognition of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe.

The small tribe was promised land by an act of Congress but a reservation never materialized. The tribe was never placed on the list of federally recognized entities either.

Assembly Joint Resolution 39 calls on Congress to correct the oversight. It passed the California Assembly last month and the Senate last week.
