Men attacked members of Passamaquoddy Tribe
Friday, August 22, 2008

A court in Maine has ordered five adult men to stay away from five young members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe.

The state accused the men of driving to the Indian Township reservation and threatening five tribal members who range in ages from 13 and 20. A 14-year-old boy and a 20-year-male were assaulted, attorney general Steve Rowe said.

"Come on, let's get the Indians," one of the men said, according to a complaint filed by the state. Other anti-Indian slurs were yelled during the attack.

The men did not admit the charges but they agreed to stay away from the victims and to refrain from future violations of the Maine Civil Rights Act.

"Racially motivated acts of violence tear at the fabric of our communities. No person should be afraid to walk the streets of our cities and towns. Maine is a place where every person has the right to feel safe," Rowe said in a statement.
