Rita Keshena, Menominee chief justice, dies at 87

Rita Keshena, the chief justice of the
Menominee Nation court, died on Sunday. She was 87.
Keshena was a tribal member. She entered the law field at age 57 to help her tribe.
"She was a strong voice for the native people, a strong voice for Indian gaming, she was a strong voice for Indian sovereignty and Indian rights and that strong voice has been stilled and the Menominees will miss her," Chair Lisa Waukau said, The Shawano Leader reported.
Keshena was appointed chief justice last November and was working to modernize the tribe's court system.
