DOJ seeks reduction in sentence for Abramoff

The Department of Justice is seeking a reduction in the sentence for convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, citing his cooperation with an ongoing corruption inquiry in Washington, D.C.

Abramoff is already in prison on bank fraud charges. He has yet to be sentenced for defrauding his tribal clients out of millions of dollars.

Judge Ellen S. Huvelle could sentence Abramoff for up to 11 years and three months. But federal prosecutors say he should serve no more than five years and four months, to run concurrently with his bank fraud sentence.

That means Abramoff could be out in another three years and three months. Along with time served, credit for good behavior and other factors, he could be released even earlier.

The sentencing hearing is set for September 4.
