The Department of Justice announced $14.9 million in tribal law enforcement grants on Thursday.

The money is going to 80 tribes in 22 states. It's part of the Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP) within the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) at DOJ.

The program help tribes with funding in a variety of areas such as hiring additional officers, law enforcement training, uniforms, basic-issue equipment, emerging technologies and police vehicles.

"Tribal police departments are an important part of the nation's law enforcement network, and it is vital that they have the resources to do their jobs. These grants will help ensure that tribes are better prepared to fight crime and to protect their communities," said Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey said in a statement.

According to DOJ, tribes have received $314.4 million in COPS grants, including $237.6 million from the TRGP.
