San Juan Southern Paiute leader indicted

The vice president of the
San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe of Arizona has been indicted on 65 counts of theft.
Evelyn James, who also has served as president, is accused of stealing $300,000 in federal funds meant for the tribe. The indictment alleges she wrote checks to herself out of money from the
Bureau of Indian Affairs and the
Indian Health Service.
The BIA took control of the tribe's self-determination contracts last year, The Arizona Republic reported. The tribe reportedly wasn't conducting audits.
The tribe has fewer than 300 members, most of whom live within the borders of the Navajo Nation. The tribe gained recognition in 1989.
