Supreme Court to hear Native Hawaiian case
Wednesday, October 1, 2008

The U.S. Supreme Court today agreed to hear a case involving the status of 1.2 million acres of Native Hawaiian lands.

The Hawaii Supreme Court on January 31 blocked the sale, exchange or transfer of any land pending resolution of claims by Native Hawaiians. The decision cited a 1993 resolution passed by Congress that apologized for the federal government's role in the overthrow of the Native Hawaiian government.

The state disputes the interpretation of the resolution and the Supreme Court agreed to resolve the dispute.
