Navajo program promotes 'healthy marriage'

The Navajo Healthy Marriages Opportunities Project in Kirtland, New Mexico, seeks to promote healthy relationships among American Indians.
The project is funded by a five-year $1 million federal grant. Since it started two years ago, organizers have served 47 couples and 471 children and they hope to reach 200 more couples.
"The heart of the program is to reach people who are already in committed relationships," Tom Chee, the coordinator of the program's fatherhood initiative, told The Farmington Daily Times. "We're here to help them improve whatever relationships they have."
Project founder Michelle Hill-Jack said the goal is not to push people into marriage. But some couples end up getting married after participating in the program.
