Cherokee council fails to override health veto
Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The Cherokee Nation council failed to override a veto of a measure to expand the Oklahoma tribe's health care system..

In September, the council authorized three new medical clinics and a new dental clinic. Chief Chad Smith vetoed the measure, saying it would limit the tribe's options. He also accused council members of "political grandstanding."

The council met Monday to consider an override but the vote failed by three votes. Three members who supported the expansion changed their minds for the override vote, The Tulsa World reported.

The tribe recently took over operations of the W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah from the Indian Health Service.
