IHS website provides 'Quality of Care' reports
Monday, October 20, 2008

A new website allows American Indian and Alaska Natives patients to learn more about the quality of care they receive at Indian Health Service facilities.

IHS set up Quality of Care as part of Executive Order 13410. The site provides reports on seven clinical performance measures: data on diabetes, immunizations, pneumonia, asthma, and stroke are available now; data for immunizations and cardiovascular disease-related measures will be added next year.

Patients can compare the performance on these measures at facilities across the country. For example, 57.3 percent of patients ages 50-64 at the Santa Fe Indian Hospital in New Mexico received flu shots, compared to 51.8 percent at all IHS facilities.

The sits also provides reports on 24 performance measures under the Government Performance and Results Act. Generally, IHS has been making improvements in reaching these measures.
