Yellow Bird: Negative ads poison Senate race

"A regional race that makes me scratch my head is the Senate race between Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and Al Frankin, the Democratic challenger who, by the way, is a satirist.
When I first saw the campaign ads about Franken, I thought, “Whoa, it looks this man should be in jail, not a Senate candidate.” That was the beginning, and before long, the TV screen began to smoke from the negative ads of these candidates. The mudslinging got so bad that it just about soiled viewers’ living rooms.
Earlier this week, Coleman said he stopped his negative ads and asked those independent groups that support him to do the same. Apparently, they do whatever they want to because some of their negative ads still are running.
And they don’t seem to be helping Coleman. He no sooner had finished saying he’d taken his negative ads off when another negative ad popped up on the screen. That makes Coleman look foolish. These are ads by independent groups, and he has asked the groups not to run them — but the groups keep doing so.
If you don’t read the fine print at the bottom of the screen, you’d think Coleman is speaking with a “forked tongue.”"
