Wednesday, October 29, 2008

The works of the late artist Fritz Scholder are the subject of a major retrospective by the National Museum of the American Indian.

Scholder, who was Luiseno, died in February 2005. He was well-known for his unusual paintings of Indian life in the 1960s and 1970s but he also drew on other subjects, such as the pyramids in Egypt and vampires.

The NMAI exhibit, Indian/not Indian, is being staged in Washington and New York City. It features more than 130 works, including some that haven't been publicly displayed in decades.
