Oglala Sioux Tribe holds presidential debate
Wednesday, October 29, 2008

The two candidates for president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota faced off in a debate at Oglala Lakota College on Tuesday.

Actor/activist Russell Means said he would engage the White House and seek to enforce the tribe's treaty rights. “[A]nd that’s when we get the Black Hills back," he said, The Rapid City Journal reported.

Theresa "Huck" Two Bulls, a tribal prosecutor and state Senator, said the tribe shouldn't rely on the federal government. She said she would try to attract private sector industries to the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The election takes place November 4. If Two Bulls wins, she will step down from the state Legislature, where she is running for re-election.
