Sen. Obama reaches out to Navajo grandmothers
Friday, October 31, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) wants elderly members of the Navajo Nation to vote, the campaign's Native vote director said.

Wizipan Garriott, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, of South Dakota, hosted Navajo Grandmothers Who Vote Day at Obama's office on the reservation yesterday. He said the Democratic presidential nominee was a better candidate for Indian Country.

"These are all the firsthand experiences American Indians have," Garriott said of growing up in a low-income, single-parent household, The Farmington Daily Times reported. "That's how we all grew up, too. Obama is the candidate most like American Indians, and he has a unique understanding of our issues."

Obama opened an office in Shiprock, New Mexico, on the reservation to reach out to members of the largest tribe in the nation. Navajo leaders have endorsed him for president.

The tribe holds its general and chapter elections on November 4. Turnout is expected to be high, as early voting was heavy on the reservation, the Daily-Times reported.
