Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina), a strong supporter of federal recognition for the
Lumbee Tribe, was voted out of office on Tuesday.
After winning election in 2002, Dole's first bill was for the Lumbees. She testified repeatedly in the Senate and in the House and lobbied Republican colleagues to support the tribe.
Dole will now be replaced by Democrat
Kay Hagan, who also supports Lumbee recognition. "The absence of full recognition deprives Lumbees of the benefits, privileges, and immunities of federal tribal status," her
platform states.
North Carolina's other senator,
Sen. Richard Burr (R), sits on the
Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
