Young Indian voter counts on Obama for change
Thursday, November 6, 2008

Shanda Poitra, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota, voted for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) because of his message of change.

"It is exciting just because it is a bit turning point for our country," Poitra, a college student, told The Grand Forks Herald. "I think what’s more important was he was the best candidate. He had the best ideas and better intentions, I believe."

Poitra said conditions on her reservation remain poor. "The tribe could use a little bit more help. I think Barack is the one who can make that happen," she said.

Obama lost North Dakota to Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona).
