Navajo voters hail election of Obama as historic
Thursday, November 6, 2008

Navajo Nation voters said the election of Barack Obama as president marks a changing point in American history.

Debbie Luther said she was glad to see a minority in the White House for the first time. “I thought someday someone will be brave enough to do that,” she told The Gallup Independent.

Raymond King said it was "about time" a minority won the presidential election. “We’re not sitting in the back seat. Maybe things will start changing for us," he said.

Navajo Nation leaders endorsed Obama in large numbers. "He's committed to all Indian nations but he’s personally committed to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. that he will be there and the appointment of a Native American to the White House will be ultimately important," Patrick Sandoval, chief of staff for the
Navajo Nation Office of the President, said of the president-elect.
