A bill to settle the water rights of the
Navajo Nation is included in a major water and public lands bill that could be considered by the lame-duck Congress.
The bill resolves the tribe's claims on the San Juan River in New Mexico. It authorizes 600,000 acre-feet of water per year for the tribe as well as a water pipeline in the eastern part of the state.
The water and public lands bill,
S.3213, may or may not come up during the session due to a hold by
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma), a member of the
Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
