Yankton Sioux Tribe continues hog farm fight
Friday, November 21, 2008

The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota continues to fight a controversial hog farm near the reservation.

The tribe asserted jurisdiction over the Longview Farm hog facility but a federal judge said the site wasn't part of the reservation. The tribe is now asking the state Water Management Board to clarify whether the operators have to apply for a commercial water permit.

The hog farm is located about four miles from tribal headquarters and about two miles from a tribal Head Start facility. Tribal members say the farm would increase pollution and harm the environment.

The only means of getting to the farm is through a road maintained by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But a federal judge said the road was never transferred to federal ownership.
