Tribes sue to stop construction of major oil pipeline

A group of tribes filed suit in federal court to stop the construction of a major oil pipeline that will run from Canada to the U.S.
The tribes say the
State Department violated 1851 and 1867 treaties and failed to consult them on the development of the
TransCanada pipeline, which will run through eastern South Dakota and North Dakota..
The plaintiffs are the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, the
Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Yankton Sioux Tribe. The Associated Press said the Santee Sioux are part of the lawsuit but didn't specify whether it was the
Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota or the
Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska.
