Editorial: Save North Dakota student powwow
Wednesday, November 26, 2008

"For 39 years, UND’s Time Out Week has been a terrific addition to the campus and Grand Forks. The annual powwow is a snapshot that has introduced generations of valley residents to Plains Indian lore. The week also features lectures, seminars and other activities that call welcome attention to Indians’ role in American history and life.

But due to a lack of community and institutional support, next year’s Time Out Week activities have been canceled, the Herald reported.

Time Out Week’s budget rings in at $100,000, and that’s a huge sum to expect students to raise. In fact, the amount is so large that raising it can be almost a full-time job, American Indian students say. It monopolizes one or more students’ time and takes away from their ability to focus on academics.

A professional coordinator could help with fundraising, budgeting and event planning — not only for the Indian and Indian Studies associations, but also for other key groups. Such events serve many purposes, including recruiting students to come to UND. So, perhaps the new position could be justified if UND might then count on an even stronger lineup of annual events."
