Judge hears Western Shoshone suit against mine
Tuesday, December 2, 2008

A federal judge declined to issue a temporary restraining order against a mine located on Western Shoshone treaty land in Nevada.

Judge Larry Hicks instead urged the plaintiffs and Barrick Gold Corporation of Canada to work together and address what work might continue at the 6,700-acre Cortez Hills Project without impacting the claims in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs want to protect Mount Tenabo, a sacred site.

The plaintiffs include the South Fork Band Council of Western Shoshone, the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, the Western Shoshone Defense Project and Great Basin Resource Watch.
