Santa Fe Indian School mum on development rumors
Wednesday, December 3, 2008

The Santa Fe Indian School in New Mexico isn't talking about its development plans but that isn't stopping the local newspaper from speculating.

The Santa Fe New Mexican talked to a woman who said she was told about plans for a casino, hotel and museum at the site. "You're going to do what? You got to be kidding me," recalled Kathryn Flynn, the executive director of the National New Deal Preservation Association, of the conversation.

Flynn said Gil Vigil of the All Indian Pueblo Council, which oversees the school property, told her not to disclose the talks. "I think he said something to someone, and they said you better go shut that broad up," Flynn said.

The school is held in trust for the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. The law that transferred the property bars gaming and states that the land must be used for education, health, or cultural purposes.
