Pascua Yaqui Tribe feels effects of sour economy
Friday, December 12, 2008

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona isn't immune from the national recession, KOLD News 13 reports.

Angelique Valenzuela of the tribe's social services department has seen an increase in families in need of assistance. Last month, the tribe fielded 700 requests for help with food, mortgage payments and utilities, up from 500 during the same period last year.

"The poverty and the recession have a big impact on the young generation that can't find jobs," Valenzuela says.

Elders are affected as well, Valenzuela says. The rising cost of food brings 350 people to the tribe's senior center every day for two hot meals.
