Judge removes owner of troubled trailer park
Friday, December 19, 2008

A federal judge removed the owner of a troubled trailer park on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation in California, saying little progress has been made in improving the facility.

“The court is at the end of the line,” Judge Stephen G. Larson told Harvey Duro of the Desert Mobile Home Park, also known as Duroville, The Palm Springs Desert Sun reported.

Duro, a tribal council member, promised to improve conditions at the park, which is home to as many as 6,000 people. Most of them are poor Indian and Hispanic migrants from Mexico and Central America.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs says the facility should be shut down due to health and safety threats.
