Yellow Bird: Starting a new chapter in life

"On March 12, I started a new chapter in my life. Although I had planned to move home this summer, my plans were moved up by three months when I was laid off along with eight other Herald employees.

Unfortunately, layoffs are a sign of the times and most assuredly for newspapers, they’re a harbinger of things to come. Competition with other news outlets and the Internet is making it tough.

As it turns out, the layoff for me was a good thing because I can go home. The Herald also is giving me a chance to continue my column. Tom Dennis, the Herald’s editorial page editor, and I agreed that Wednesdays would be the day for my weekly column beginning in early May.

When I’m settled into my new “digs” at home near Garrison, N.D., I will write again. Readers still can reach me at sahnish65@gmail.com or (701) 741-0224.

I’ll be moving to a parcel of reservation land where I’m hoping I’ll have a house built in the next six months. If all goes well, I will be overlooking some of the beautiful prairie that I love."
