Winnebago Yankee pleads guilty to DUI charge
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Joba Chamberlain, a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska who plays for the New York Yankees, pleaded guilty this morning to a drunken driving charge.

Chamberlain admitted to a first-offense DUI charge. His blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit when he was pulled over in Lincoln, Nebraska, last October.

“You worked hard to get where you are,” the judge told Chamberlain, 23, The Lincoln Journal Star reported. “ It takes about 10 seconds to ruin all that. You cross the center line and take out a family.”

Chamberlain apologized for the incident, which prompted anti-Indian comments on newspaper web sites across the country.
