Ward Churchill wins wrongful termination lawsuit

Churchill was wrongfully terminated from the
University of Colorado, a jury determined on Thursday.
The jury said the school took action only because Churchill wrote a controversial essay about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. “This is a great victory for the First Amendment, and for academic freedom,” said David A. Lane, The New York Times reported.
The jury awarded Churchill $1 in damages, after asking the judge awarding him a $0 was possible. "Here's the dollar," Churchill said in court after the verdict, The Denver Post reported.
Churchill said the goal of his lawsuit was to get his job back at CU. "I did not ask for money. I asked for justice," he said.
Churchill has claimed Cherokee and Creek heritage but is not enrolled in a federally recognized tribe.
