Series: First Nations and the 2010 Olympic games
Monday, April 6, 2009
Filed Under: First Nations | Sports

The Vancouver Sun is running a six-part series on First Nations in British Columbia and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Four Host First Nations are taking advantage of the event to promote tribal culture and history. The games are being played on traditional territory of the Lil’wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.

“We have such a rich culture, and now is our chance to show who we really are, not in the political arena and not in the courts," Tewanee Joseph, the executive director of the Four Host First Nations, told the paper.

But Joseph said other First Nations will be represented during the games. Dancers, artists and singers from Native communities throughout Canada will be showcased at the $3.5 million Four Host First Nations Pavilion.

The series continues through Saturday and includes an article about potential Native protests during the games.
