Kevin Abourezk: Screenings for 'Battle for Whiteclay'
Thursday, April 9, 2009
Filed Under: Arts & Entertainment | National

"A western Nebraska college on Wednesday set dates and times for free screenings of a film about alcohol sales in Whiteclay.

Mark Vasina, director and producer of “The Battle for Whiteclay,” said earlier this week he was told Western Nebraska Community College had canceled three screenings planned for next week.

But college officials said screenings at the college’s three campuses in Alliance, Scottsbluff and Sydney were never canceled, and that the college welcomed the chance to host discussions on issues of public interest.

Whiteclay is a small Nebraska town near South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned. Four stores in the town sell about 4 million cans of beer a year, mostly to the reservation.

“After viewing the documentary, ‘Battle for Whiteclay,’ WNCC administration has agreed this film is educational of nature and of great public interest,” Mindy Burbach, the college’s marketing and public relations director, said Wednesday."
