First Nations in Manitoba have been devastated by recent flooding in the province.
More than 1,000 people were forced to leave their reserves, or nearly half of all the evacuees in the province. Some will return to damaged homes and some, like those from the
Peguis First Nation, won't be able to go home at all because nearly 80 percent of the reserve is under water.
Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl said the Canadian government will help with recovery efforts. "There is concern about water contamination, backed-up sewer systems, and it needs to be cleaned up properly or there will be long-term problems, so we'll be there to help," he said, CBC News reported.
