Obama releases details of fiscal year 2010 budget
Thursday, May 7, 2009

President Barack Obama released details of his $3.4 trillion fiscal year 2010 budget today.

The budget for the Bureau of Indian Affairs promises increases for most programs. Education, public safety and water right settlements would receive the biggest boosts, according to the document for the Interior Department.

The Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians would only see a small increase next year. Tribes have complained that the OST's mission and budget grew out of control during the Bush administration.

Funding for the National Indian Gaming Commission largely remains the same. The agency's budget is based on fees assessed on tribal operations.

The Indian Health Service would see increases in clinical services, preventive health and urban Indian programs. The budget contains a significant boost for contract support costs, according to the document for the Department of Health and Human Services.

The budget also contains $17 billion in cuts. Two programs that affect Alaska Natives would be eliminated or reduced, according to one document.
