Cherokee Nation lobbies against 'Cherokees'

The
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is lobbying to prevent the
Tennessee Legislature from recognizing groups that claim Cherokee ancestry.
House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey introduced a bill to recognize six groups. Four of them claimed Cherokee ties so the Cherokee Nation hired two lobbyists to fight the measure.
The effort resulted in five of the six groups being removed from the bill at the committee level. The only one left in the bill is the
Remnant Yuchi Nation.
"We don't have a dog in that fight (over the Yuchi)," Cherokee Chief Chad Smith told The Knoxville News Sentinel .
