Tribal critic to testify at land-into-trust hearing
Tuesday, May 19, 2009

South Dakota attorney general Larry Long, who has fought tribes on land-into-trust, sovereignty and jurisdiction issues, will testify this Thursday on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar.

Long, who serves as chairman of the Conference of Western Attorneys General, has argued that the land-into-trust provisions of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 are unconstitutional. He has signed onto a number of briefs opposing tribal rights in several Supreme Court cases, including Carcieri.

Also scheduled to testify before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee are Ed Lazarus, of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, and Ron Allen, the secretary of the National Congress of American Indians and the chairman of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe of Washington.
