Deal with Oneida Nation dies amid opposition

A deal that would have resolved land-into-trust and taxation issues with the
Oneida Nation of New York fell apart on Thursday amid local opposition.
Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente
Jr. announced the deal less than two weeks ago. It would have required the tribe to pay back property taxes in exchange for the county dropping opposition to a land-into-trust application.
But Picente ran into opposition from fellow Republicans, who announced they would not vote for the deal when it came up for consideration next week. County Democrats also said they would not back it.
Picente said he would try to negotiate a different agreement but he didn't appear optimistic about the chances.
