Mashantucket Tribe plans smaller powwow
Tuesday, June 9, 2009

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut plans to hold a smaller powwow this August after canceling Schemitzun, one of the largest inter-tribal gatherings in the U.S.

The powwow will be held at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. “We can't call it Schemitzun, but it will be our traditional way of giving thanks to the creator. Patrons will be able to participate and it'll bring the museum to life," council member Marjorie Colebut-Jackson told The New London Day. "It just won't be the same magnitude.”

Schemitzun was held every year since 1991. The four-day event featured a powoww, rodeo, arts and crafts and cultural demonstrations. The tribe said the event was too costly to support.
