Radio program brings Mixtec community together
Tuesday, June 9, 2009

A unique radio program is one of the few in the nation with a Native language focus.

"La Hora Mixteca" (The Mixtec Hour) began 1995. Based in Fresno, Califonria, host Filemón López offers programming, music, advice and more in Mixtec, a language spoken in Mexico, and in Spanish.

"This is really old-fashioned radio that has the special effect of making people feel they are part of this close-knit community and speaking in their language," Gaspar Rivera-Salgado, the director at the Center for Labor Research and Education at the University of California, Los Angeles, told The New York Times.

An estimated 150,00 Mxtec live in California, where they are often discriminated for their limited education and limited Spanish skills.
