Another swine flu case among Manitoba Natives
Wednesday, June 10, 2009
Filed Under: First Nations | Health

A boy from the Garden Hill First Nation is the latest cast of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, among Natives in Manitoba.

Chief David Hill said the 1 1/2-year-old boy wasn't receiving sufficient treatment at a nursing station on the reserve. The boy was flown to a children's hospital in Winnipeg, where he was diagnosed with the virus.

"There was no proper medical treatment in Garden Hill. We have a concern and will be raising the issue to the minister of health," Hill told CBC News.

On the St. Theresa Point First Nation, more than 200 people have become sick. Two people have been confirmed with swine flu.

Health officials said 26 people in the province are in intensive care for flu-related reasons. More than half of the patients are Native and under the age of 35.
