Campo Band announces major wind power project
Thursday, June 11, 2009

The Campo Band of Mission Indians of the Kumeyaay Nation and San Diego Gas & Electric are building a major power plant on the tribe's reservation in southern California.

The plant will be the second largest of its kind in the state. The $300 million project, 160-megawatt wind farm will provide power to more than 100,000 homes.

“Development of this project will expand the Campo tribe’s leadership as the largest producer of clean, renewable wind energy on Indian lands in the United States,” Campo Chairwoman Monique La Chappa said in a press release. “We are excited to be working with Invenergy and San Diego Gas & Electric to bring this project to reality for the benefit of our tribal members and residents of San Diego County.”

The tribe already operates 25 wind turbines on the reservation. The project calls for the addition of as many as 100 windmills.
