Letter: Standing Rock Sioux vote on UND nickname
Monday, June 15, 2009

"I am writing because of my deep concern for all the Lakota people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

The people have the right and need to know that our elected chairman, Ron His Horse Is Thunder, and at-large council representative, Jesse Taken Alive, have in my opinion violated the rights of the people.

The violations of which I speak are the freedom of speech and religion, as well as the privileges that have been bestowed upon the Lakota Sioux people. These men have refused to allow the people to exercise their constitutional right and privilege to vote on the issue of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

His Horse Is Thunder maintains the tribal constitution must be amended before either the tribal council or the tribal people can be allowed to vote on the issue of the nickname and logo. This resulted in the Standing Rock tribal attorney writing an opinion on this supposedly required amendment."
