McDonald's not concerned about 'Custer' toy
Tuesday, June 16, 2009

McDonald's isn't addressing complaints about a "George Armstrong Custer" toy in its Happy Meals.

The toy is part of a promotion for the Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Sioux people in South Dakota say Custer's inclusion ignores history.

"It's insensitive and disrespectful," Laurette Pourier, the executive director for the Society for the Advancement of Native Interests-Today, told The Rapid City Journal.

But the company wouldn't address the concerns when asked by the paper. "At McDonald's, we value and respect people of all ethnicities, as well as their cultural history," a spokesperson Danya Proud said in an e-mailed statement. "The 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' Happy Meal features eight toys portraying different characters from the film. As with all Happy Meal promotions, our goal is to provide families a positive experience that can be shared by all."

Tim Giago of The Native Sun News first broke the story last week.
